The Burning Libraries
Every day, somewhere in the world, a library burns.
Not a building of stone and timber. Not shelves lined with leather-bound manuscripts or flickering microfilm. Something far more irreplaceable disappears: a human being dies, and with that death vanishes an entire universe of accumulated experience—lessons painfully acquired, mistakes that will never need repeating, instincts sharpened over decades, relationships cultivated across a lifetime, problems solved in ways no textbook ever documented, and quiet discoveries that were never written down.
We gather at funerals. We mourn the individual. We comfort the grieving family and celebrate a life well lived. Then, as we must, we move on.
What we rarely pause to acknowledge is that humanity itself has suffered a loss that can never be recovered. Every death erases a unique constellation of knowledge that no one else possesses—knowledge that no amount of artificial intelligence, academic scholarship, or historical archiving can ever reconstruct. The library has burned, and its contents are gone forever.
For thousands of years, civilization has advanced because each generation has built upon the work of those who came before. This is the fundamental bargain of human progress: we inherit what our ancestors discovered, add our own contributions, and pass the enlarged inheritance forward. We celebrate scientific breakthroughs, engineering marvels, medical advances, artistic achievements, and political reforms precisely because we understand, almost instinctively, that progress depends on preserving knowledge rather than rediscovering it from scratch.
This understanding is why we build libraries.
It is why universities exist.
It is why scientific journals are published, why patents are filed, why textbooks are written and revised and written again.
Every researcher knows that before claiming a new discovery, they must first understand what has already been discovered. Every engineer stands on the shoulders of earlier engineers. Every physician learns from centuries of accumulated medical knowledge before treating a single patient. Every inventor begins where the previous inventor left off.
Civilizations advance because knowledge is preserved and transmitted.
Now imagine, for a moment, what the world would look like if this were not the case. Imagine if every scientific discovery vanished when its discoverer died. Imagine if Newton’s laws of motion had existed only in his mind, extinguished the moment he drew his last breath. Imagine if Marie Curie’s research on radioactivity had disappeared with her, if Einstein’s equations had never been written down, if every mathematical proof, every engineering schematic, every medical breakthrough, every philosophical insight had been lost because no one thought it important enough to record.
Human civilization would still be living in caves, each generation condemned to rediscover fire.
Fortunately, we learned long ago how to preserve factual knowledge. But we have almost completely ignored another kind of knowledge: practical wisdom.
Wisdom cannot be easily measured or quantified. It resists expression as equations or algorithms. It rarely appears in textbooks or peer-reviewed journals. Yet it often determines whether formal knowledge succeeds or fails when it encounters the complexity of actual human existence.
That’s because wisdom arises from what I have come to think of as the invisible curriculum of life.
How do you earn the trust of someone who has been betrayed before? How do you recognize character in a person you have just met? How do you recover from a failure so devastating that you can barely get out of bed? How do you lead a team of people who fundamentally disagree with one another? How do you build a marriage that deepens over decades rather than dissolving? How do you persuade without manipulating, influence without coercing? How do you recognize an opportunity before everyone else sees it—and equally important, how do you know when to persist in a difficult endeavor and when to walk away?
How do you raise children who become kind adults? How do you survive grief without being destroyed by it? How do you build friendships that endure for fifty years? How do you remain curious and engaged at ninety?
None of these questions has a single correct answer. They are not the kind of problems that yield to optimization or controlled experiments. Yet millions of people have spent entire lifetimes discovering answers that worked for them—answers forged in the crucible of lived experience, tested against the resistance of reality, refined through failure and success alike.
Those discoveries represent an immense reservoir of practical wisdom.
And then these people die.
Almost all of that wisdom disappears with them.
Consider the profound asymmetry in what our civilization chooses to preserve.
A research scientist may spend thirty years conducting experiments and writing papers. When she dies, she leaves behind hundreds of publications, meticulously archived and indexed, available to anyone with a university library card or internet connection. Her factual contributions to human knowledge are preserved indefinitely.
Meanwhile, a hospice nurse may spend forty-five years at the bedsides of dying patients, learning subtle ways to ease fear, restore dignity, and bring comfort during life’s most difficult passage. She develops an intuitive understanding of what the dying need, what their families need, what words help and what words harm. Over four decades, she accumulates wisdom that no medical school teaches.
Whose contribution is easier to preserve? The scientist’s.
Whose knowledge may be equally valuable to humanity? The nurse’s.
One is carefully archived in institutional repositories. The other dies with her, and the next generation of hospice nurses must learn those lessons all over again.
The same pattern repeats across every domain of human endeavor. The teacher who somehow reached children no one else could reach—her methods are rarely documented. The entrepreneur who sensed market shifts years before they became obvious—his pattern recognition dies with him. The farmer who learned to read weather by observing subtle changes in the natural world, the community organizer who understood how to bring divided neighbors together, the parent who built a family suffused with love despite difficult circumstances—their knowledge is real, their methods worked, but almost none of it is systematically captured.
We have constructed magnificent systems for preserving information.
We have built almost no systems for preserving wisdom.
Some readers may object that we already have biographies and memoirs, oral history projects and documentary films. And the world is witnessing a renaissance in Indigenous ways of knowing. These forms of preservation matter, but they remain the exception rather than the rule.
The vast majority of people never write their life stories. They lack the time, the confidence, or the sense that their experiences would interest anyone beyond their immediate families. Even when people do record their memories, the emphasis typically falls on what happened—the narrative of events—rather than on what was learned. The facts of a life get captured; the lessons often do not.
This tragedy grows more acute with every passing year.
The generation born in the aftermath of World War II—the Baby Boomers—is now entering the final chapters of life. Never before has such a large, educated, and experienced generation reached old age simultaneously. These are men and women who transformed medicine, computing, aviation, telecommunications, finance, manufacturing, education, journalism, and public service. Many also navigated extraordinary personal lives: raising families through social upheaval, surviving economic recessions, caring for aging parents, recovering from illness, adapting to technological revolutions that reshaped every aspect of daily life, and reinventing themselves multiple times over.
Collectively, they represent one of the greatest reservoirs of practical wisdom ever assembled in a single generation.
Within the next two decades, most of that reservoir will drain away.
Imagine if every person reaching the age of seventy were encouraged—supported, even expected—to create what might be called a Legacy Record.
If you belong to this older generation, ask yourself: What were the greatest turning points you encountered? What mistakes taught you the most? Who shaped your thinking in ways that still influence you today? What principles guided your most important decisions? When were you wrong about something significant, and how did that error change you? How did you recover from your worst failures? What advice would you offer to someone just beginning a similar journey? What truths took you decades to discover?
Then imagine updating that record periodically—at seventy, at seventy-five, at eighty, and beyond. The perspective shifts over time. Wisdom deepens. What seemed like a detour at sixty-five may reveal itself as the central thread of a life at eighty-five. Priorities evolve. Understanding ripens.
If such records existed at scale—thousands, eventually millions of them—patterns would begin to emerge. Researchers could study these life histories with the same rigor they bring to epidemiology or economics. Not merely patterns about careers and income, but patterns about resilience, about character, about what sustains relationships across decades, about how people find purpose and meaning, about the pathways through adversity that actually work.
For the first time in human history, we could begin studying wisdom systematically.
Universities could identify recurring themes in successful lives. Psychologists could map common strategies for navigating loss and transition. Educators could teach practical life skills grounded not in theory alone but in the accumulated experience of generations. Young people would no longer depend solely on the curated personas of social media influencers; they would have access to the authentic, unpolished wisdom of millions who had already walked the roads before them.
Some will argue that every life is unique, that wisdom is not transferable, that what works for one person cannot be generalized to others. There is truth in this objection. No database, however vast, can eliminate the need for individual judgment. The circumstances of each life are singular; the same advice that liberates one person may constrain another.
But the same could be said of medical research. No two patients are identical. No two clinical trials produce exactly the same results. Yet medicine advances by identifying patterns across thousands of cases, discovering interventions that help more people than they harm. Progress comes not from finding universal laws but from discerning probabilistic regularities—tendencies, correlations, strategies that work more often than the alternatives.
Why should human wisdom be treated differently?
The greatest advances of the coming century may not emerge solely from artificial intelligence or more powerful pharmaceuticals. They may emerge from a deeper understanding of ourselves—from finally recognizing that wisdom, like scientific knowledge, is a form of intellectual capital worthy of deliberate preservation.
Perhaps one day creating a Legacy Record will become as routine as preparing a will or maintaining medical records. Not because any government mandates it, but because society comes to recognize that every long life contains discoveries too valuable to lose.
When we think about inheritance, we usually think about property and money. We have been thinking too narrowly. The greatest gift we can leave our grandchildren is not another possession, another investment account, another family heirloom. It is ourselves—our stories, our failures, our insights, and the lessons that took a lifetime to learn, captured in some durable form that outlasts our biological existence.
If we can preserve these gifts with the same care we devote to our scientific and cultural heritage, then every generation will leave humanity richer than it found it. The living libraries will still close. But they will no longer burn.
